Olympic Stadium. Satellite image of the city area surrounding the Stade Olympique (Olympic Stadium, white, centre), Montreal, Canada. North is at top. The area seen is about 3 kilometres across. The stadium, built for the 1976 Summer Olympics, is next to an area of parkland (upper left) that includes a botanical garden. The rest of the area is mostly housing (grid patterns). The stadium has a large 169-metre-tall tower that was used to retract the roof (both completed in 1988). In 1999 a permanent roof was installed instead. Also known as the Big-O, proposals have been made to demolish the stadium. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite on 12 December 2001.
