Description
Ole Worm (1588-1654), Danish physician and antiquary. Worm studied at Marburg, Basel and Copenhagen. He qualified as a physician at Basel, and spent most of his career at the University of Copenhagen. He was personal physician to King Christian IV of Denmark. He studied embryology, and assembled a cabinet of curiosities that included animal, plant, mineral, and fossil specimens. The inscription for this artwork gives the year (1626) and states (in Latin) that he is aged 38, an doctor of medicine, and an academic and professor at Copenhagen (Hafnia). Artwork, engraved by Simon de Passe, from 'Danicorum monumentorum libri sex' (1643).
