Heart surgery with Octopus device. Open-heart surgery being carried out on a beating heart using Medtronic's Octopus (R) technology. The grey tube (mounted on the metal rib spreaders) ends in two 'tentacles' (centre left) that use suction to gently spread and stabilize an area of the heart. This allows surgeons to carry out coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery on a beating heart. This excludes the potential complications and additional trauma of stopping the heart and using a heart-lung machine. CABG surgery involves taking a blood vessel from elsewhere in the body and grafting it to the heart. This is done to bypass a blockage in the heart's coronary arteries.
