Artist's Description

Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of octacalciumphosphate (OCP) crytals. The size of this flower-like structure is less than the diameter of a human hair. It formed in a solution containing proteins. OCP is widely regarded as a biological precursor to apatite, the mineral that makes up human teeth and bones.
