Description
Jaundice baby treatment. Nurse attending to a newborn baby in an incubator undergoing ultraviolet phototherapy to treat jaundice. Neonatal jaundice consists of yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes due to the accumulation of bilirubin, a bile pigment, in the blood. It is a common condition in newborn babies but rarely requires treatment. The ultraviolet light causes the chemical breakdown of bilirubin which is then excreted in the urine. The baby's eyes are blindfolded to protect them from the light. Photographed in Iran.
