Description
NSLS II particle accelerator magnets. View of one of the magnet girders for the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS II) particle accelerator, at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA. Each girder holds multiple magnets for the NSLS II accelerator ring. The NSLS II produces synchrotron radiation emitted as a result of electrons being accelerated around electron storage rings. This synchrotron radiation is then used for a variety of experiments in fields as varied as solid state physics, materials science, chemistry, biology and medicine. Construction of the NSLS II began in 2009 and is scheduled for completion in 2015. Photographed in 2012.
