Artist's Description

Northern Red Sea, 1830s. 19th-century map of the upper (northern) part of the Red Sea, with north at upper left. The map extends north from Jeddah (here labelled Jiddah) at top right to the Gulf of Aqaba (top left) and Gulf of Suez (bottom left). This map uses a Mercator projection, and was compiled from a stasimetric survey carried out from 1830 to 1833 by surveyors on the East India Company ship Palinurus. Relief is shown in hachures, and depths obtained by soundings are also shown. Some cities include names in Arabic. There are marginal coastal profiles across top and bottom. The map was produced by Commander Robert Moresby and Lieutenant Thomas Grere Carless of the Indian Navy.
