Description
North and South America, 1590s. 16th-century map of the Americas, titled in Latin: Americae et proximar regionum orae descriptio. The map shows relief pictorially, with text in Latin. The text includes references to Christopher Columbus (upper left and upper right) and his landing in the Americas in 1492, as well as Ferdinand Magellan's ship Victoria (lower left), used to circumnavigate the globe from 1519 to 1522. The prime meridian used here is the Ferro Meridian, running through El Hierro (Ferro), the westernmost of the Canary Islands. This map was produced by Giovanni Battista Massa (active 1590-1597) and Donato Rascicotti. It was published in Venice in around the 1590s. This is a copy of the second state of the map.
