Description
North and Central America climate model. Computer model showing the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) in North and Central America during the day. The NEE is the difference in photosynthetic uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) and the emission of CO2 through respiration. Green areas represent strong uptake of CO2 from the atmosphere (negative NEE) by photosynthesising vegetation. Red represents respiration (positive NEE) due to CO2 expired by vegetation and soil microbes. The NEE simulation helps scientists to model climate change. This visualisation was created on a Cray X1E supercomputer in 2008.
