Artist's Description
The American continent, seen from space. This false-colour mosaic shows the whole of North and South America, the Caribbean islands and Greenland. At the top of the frame is the extensive North Polar ice cap. Greenland is the white, triangular area at top right. Areas of lush vegetation, such as South America's rain forests, are shown as reddish-brown. Mountainous terrain may be seen running down the west coast of both continents, showing the Rocky Mountains (North America) and Andes (South America). The data for this image come from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instruments on NOAA satellites.
