Description
Nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) in grass. This omnivorous mammal is found in South America, but its range has steadily been expanding into North America and the southern USA. It has a distinctive banded turtle-like shell (carapace), and a long snout that is used with its front feet for digging. It mostly eats insects and other invertebrates, as well as carrion and some plant material. Body length can be 40-60 centimetres. It is generally nocturnal. Photographed in Orlando, Florida, USA.
