Description

Newton's birthplace, Woolsthorpe Manor, Lincolnshire, England. This house was the birthplace and home for many years of the English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton (1642-1727). Newton retreated from Cambridge to this isolated country manor in 1665 during the Great Plague. It was here that he worked for the next two years on his theories of calculus and gravitation, amongst others. He returned to Cambridge in 1667. The house is owned and maintained by the National Trust. This artwork is from the 7 January 1826 edition of the London magazine 'The Mirror of Literature, Amusement and Instruction'.
