Description
Hatched brown trout fry. Close-up of newly hatched fry (alevins) of the brown trout, Salmo trutta, on a river bed. The brown trout is a large edible fish related to salmon. Three types of brown trout exist, living in the lakes, rivers and oceans of Europe. All trout come to rivers to spawn. The yolk-rich eggs are laid in a pit excavated in the river bed by the female. A single female may lay 10,000 eggs. The male fertilizes the eggs with his milt (sperm) after the eggs are laid. The hatched young remain in the pit as long as they still have yolk to feed on. When the supply is exhausted they leave the pit and feed independently on small animals.
