Artist's Description

Neville Woolf. Portrait of Professor Neville (Nick) Woolf (born 1932), British-born American astronomer. Working at the University of Arizona, USA, Woolf is searching for planets in other solar systems. He is the co-inventor (with Roger Angel) of the optical system of the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF), a space-borne telescope which is proposed to be launched in 2010. The TPF's four huge mirrors are expected to obtain pictures of Earth-like planets orbiting distant stars. Using a spectrometer, it could also analyze light from distant planets to determine if they have any atmospheric chemicals produced by life-forms. Photographed in 1997.
