Artist's Description

Netted stinkhorn fungus (Phallus duplicatus). The tip of the fungus exudes a glutinous gleba (spore mass). This has a distinctive foul smell which mimics carrion, attracting flies to land on the end piece. They suck up some of the gleba then fly away, dispersing the spores through their excrement. Photographed at Tiputini Biodiversity Station in Quito, Ecuador.
