Description
Longitudinal section through a fingernail. The nail plate itself is made of hard keratin, and arises from the most superficial layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum. Embedded in the skin of the finger to the left is the nail matrix whose cells proliferate to produce the growing nail. Magnification x5 when height printed at 10cm.
