Description
Mushroom gill cap, light micrograph. Transverse section through the cap of a common mushroom (Psalliota sp.) showing the gill lamellae (white). The gills run from the outer cap (pileus, grey) to the inner stem (stipe, centre). The gills produces basidia cells, which each liberate four spores (basidiospores) to be distributed by the wind. The spores that germinate will produce a new fungal body. Magnification: x11 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
