Description
Muscle cell culture research. Laboratory incubator, being used to grow muscle cell cultures. The label warns that virus incubation also takes place here. This work involves rat fibroblast cells. This work is being carried out at Dundee University, Scotland. The aim is to culture muscle cells and stem cells and engineer skeletal muscle, tendons and cardiac muscle in the laboratory. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that, given the right stimulus, can develop into any body tissue. This could lead to treatments for muscle injuries or defects. This research, ongoing as of 2006, is being carried out by Dr Keith Barr and colleagues in the functional molecular biology laboratory.
