Description
Mountains on Pluto. Satellite image of the dwarf planet Pluto, looking over the smooth expanse of the Sputnik Planum (right), which is flanked to the west (left) by rugged mountains rising up to 3,500 metres high. These mountains include Norgay Montes (foreground) and Hillary Montes (on the skyline). To the right, east of Sputnik, rougher terrain is cut by apparent glaciers. The backlighting highlights more than a dozen layers of haze in Pluto's atmosphere. This image covers around 380 kilometres across. Imaged by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft on 14th July 2015, from a distance of 18,000 kilometres.
