Mount Ngauruhoe volcano. This volcano is part of the large Tongariro volcano complex on New Zealand's North Island. It is the highest peak of this complex, reaching 2291 metres above sea level. The complex is still active, and erupted 45 times in the 20th century. As of spring 2006, its last eruption was in 1977. Mount Ngauruhoe found global fame when it was used as the fictional Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
