Description
Moss stems, light micrograph. Transverse section through stems of a cord moss (Polytrichum commune). The outside of the stems, the epidermis, is made up of thick-walled cells. Below the epidermis is a cortex made up of thin-walled cells. In the center of the stem is the axial cylinder. This consists of a core (hadrome) made up of large thickened cells thought to conduct water, and a thin outer layer (leptome) of thin-walled cells thought to conduct food. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
