Description
Photograph of the eastern portion of the waning, gibbous Moon. The dark, flat area in the centre of the photo is a lava-filled impact crater called the Mare Nectaris. The prominent crater with the central peak, on its western edge, is Theophilus. Below and to the left of the Mare Nectaris is a long, gently-curving ridge known as the Altai Escarpment. At the end of the escarpment, just short of the terminator (day-night boundary), is the crater Piccolomini. The large crater above Piccolomini, on the edge of the Mare Nectaris, is Fracastorius.
