Artist's Description
Computer graphics image illustrating the molecular structure of a human monoclonal antibody. Human monoclonal antibodies are produced by harvesting B lymphocytes, cells which produce antibodies in response to a foreign substance (antigen). These are fused with myeloma (tumour) cells from a human cell line to produce hybridoma cells. Normal B- lymphocytes are short lived with a limited potential to produce antibody; a hybridoma of one type of B-cell and a tumour cell is a potential long-term source of a single, specific antibody. Applications include specific diagnostic tests for viral & malignant disease & targeting radiotherapy and chemotherapy in treating cancers.
