Description
Monument Valley. View of snow covered Monument Valley at sunrise. The flat-topped hills (buttes) are from left to right: West Mitten, East Mitten & Merrick Butte. The buttes of Monument Valley are formed of caps of resistant sandstone. They surround softer beds which have worn away leaving the distinctive horizontally-bedded landscape: a flat floodplain floor with flat-topped hills. Buttes, as seen here, are flat-topped hills whose height exceeds their width. Typically they have a narrow summit. As lateral erosion proceeds and makes them even narrower, the butte is broken down further into a series of vertical columns. Photographed in Arizona, USA.
