Milk snake, Lampropeltis triangulum, found in the eastern part of the U.S.A., so called because an old myth has it that these snakes suck milk from cows. It is a ground dwelling snake whose patterning consists of white and black rings seperated by a red intermediate area. The head is rather small and not very distinct from the neck region, and its smooth scales lack ridges. These king snakes feed upon other snakes, even poisonous ones. Their diet also includes small mammals, lizards and fish. When a king snake seizes another snake, it wraps its body firmly around, and chokes it.
