Description
Meteor over London. This artwork dates from 1851 and the original caption stated: 'Remarkable Meteor seen on Sunday night, from the London and Blackwall Extension Railway'. The buildings of London are seen on the skyline. Meteors are fragments of space rocks burning up in the atmosphere, forming the streak of light seen here. An illustration of this sighting was published in an 1851 issue of The Illustrated London News, which reported that the sighting took place at about 11pm between Stepney and Bow stations. The London and Blackwall Railway was a railway in East London, with this extension opening in 1849.
