Description
Meridian circle instrument. 19th-century meridian circle observations being carried out. This instrument is a specialised type of transit instrument, used to measure the position of stars as they cross a meridian. This model was made by the German instrument makers Repsold. It is in use here at the Washburn Observatory at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. This observatory was built in 1881. At lower right is the US astronomer John Tatlock (1860-1926) who worked on meridian circle observations at Washburn Observatory in the 1880s.
