Merced River. View of a conifer forest on the banks of the Merced river running through the Yosemite National Park, California, USA. This park is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The Merced river runs through the famous Yosemite valley, a gorge 7 miles long and 1 mile wide. The valley was carved out by glaciers which rounded the great precipices of granite that rise about 4,000 feet from the valley floor (seen in the background here). Yosemite National Park was established in 1890 and covers over a thousand square miles.
