Artist's Description
Medical purging. Satirical artwork showing a physician (in robes) and his assistant purging patients. Follies and fantasies are purged in a cloud (upper right) using an oven to bake the head. Fools are purged using a drug to force excretion (left). Originally French, this later German artwork was drawn in Strasbourg circa 1600 by German artist Matthias Greuter (1564-1638). This version names the doctor 'Wurmbrandt' (worm burner), and is part of a collection held in Frankfurt. This copy was reproduced in 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).
