Description
Mass spectrometry food research. US food chemist William H. McFadden (born 1927) operating the mass spectrometer portion of a gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy apparatus. Use of such devices was pioneered here at the Western Regional Research Center, of the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture. Applications included the use of the new machines to identify individual chemicals contributing to odour and flavour. Photographed in 1963.
