Description
Masirah Island Air Base, Oman, satellite image. Masirah is a small island in the Arabian Gulf, 14 kilometres from Oman. In the 1930s the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) built an unmanned staging post at the northern tip of the island. This was modernised and expanded during World War 2 when it was used by British, Dutch and American forces. In the 1970s the RAF sold the airbase to the Royal Air Force of Oman. The airbase is available for use by the United States Air Force (USAF) who use it during their Middle Eastern operations. The USAF have also modernised and expanded the airbase. Taken by the Ikonos satellite in 3 October 2001.
