Description
Illustration of the German theologian and founder of the Protestant Reformation Martin Luther (1483-1546, left) at the Diet of Worms, Germany, in April 1521. In 1517 Luther posted a set of objections against the Catholic church on the door of the church at Wittenberg. This act is seen as the start of the Protestant Reformation. Luther was excommunicated in January 1521 and called to the Diet to revoke his heresies. Unwilling to do so, he was declared an outlaw. He translated the Bible into German and his hymns inspired singing in churches.
