Description
Martian sand dunes. Coloured satellite image of sand dunes on the base of a crater in Noachis Terra, Mars. Wind blowing from one direction causes the sand to form crescent shapes, known as barchan sand dunes. Sand on Mars is made from volcanic basalt rock, which is darker in colour than sand on Earth. Image obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) on 1st September 2013.
