Marsh samphire stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a marsh samphire, (Salicornia europaea) plant. This is a succulent, xerophytic, halophyte plant. The palisade layers (pink) can be seen under the epidermis (outer layer, red). The cortex (central whitish area) consists of very large parenchyma cells full of storage water with mucilage and large air spaces (aerenchyma). The vascular cylinder (centre) has six vascular bundles within an outer pericycle. These bundles are made up of phloem mucilaginous cells (pink), and xylem vesssels and tracheids (deep red). Magnification: x46 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
