Description
Olympus Mons volcano. Coloured Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) image of the Olympus Mons volcano. This is the largest known volcano in the solar system, standing over 26 kilometres tall and having a width of some 700 kilometres. The caldera (crater) at upper left is 90 kilometres wide. In upper frame, white clouds cover the plain next to the volcano. Martian clouds are made mostly of carbon dioxide ice crystals. This image was taken in 1998, and was coloured by combining red and blue light images from the Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) on the MGS. MGS is a NASA satellite orbiting Mars which has been observing and mapping the planet from orbit since 1998.
