Artist's Description
Mariner 5 spacecraft, 1967. This spacecraft carried experiments and sensors that were used to probe the atmosphere of Venus, and measure the radiation and magnetic fields around the planet. It was launched on 14 June 1967, and travelled past Venus on 19 October 1967. The results received helped to establish that Venus had a very hot surface and a dense atmosphere. The mission ended in November, with the spacecraft left to orbit the Sun in a heliocentric orbit. Photographed on 22 May 1967.
