Description
Marine iguana swimming. View of a marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) swimming. This is the only truly marine lizard, spending much of its time in the water feeding on seaweed and algae near the shore. Marine iguanas swim by tucking in their legs and propelling themselves with snake- like movements of their tail. They are large lizards, with some individuals reaching almost two metres in length. They form large herds along the rocky coastlines of the Galapagos Islands, their sole habitat. The arrival of humans and their animals has led to a reduction in iguana numbers on the islands. Photographed off the Ecuadorian Galapagos Islands.
