Foal birth (image 1 of 3). Mare (Equus caballus) resting on a bed of straw as she gives birth to a foal. The foal can be seen emerging enclosed in its amniotic sac (or amnion). Horses have a gestation period of 11 months and, as is the case here, nearly always give birth to a single foal. Photographed in Normandy, France.
