Description
MarCO miniature satellite. CubeSat spacecraft at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), one of the two MarCO (Mars Cube One) satellites designed for use with the InSight Mars lander. The InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) lander is designed for studying the interior of Mars. It will investigate the processes that formed and shaped Mars and its findings will improve understanding of the evolution of the inner solar system's rocky planets. The Mars Cube One miniature satellites will fly past Mars during the entry, descent and landing (EDL) phase and relay data back to Earth and via the main relay satellite, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (already in orbit). InSight and MarCO were launched on 5 May 2018. They are scheduled to reach Mars in November 2018. Photographed at JPL in Pasadena, California, USA. Image published in 2016.
