Description
Map of the Americas. 17th-century map of North America and South America, showing the extent of these continents as recorded by European explorations. The inset at bottom left shows the northern hemisphere view, arching from Greenland round to the straits between North America and Asia. The Latin text at top describes the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492, and the naming of the continents by Amerigo Vespucci in 1499. Sea monsters are shown in the oceans, along with boats and sailing ships. The Latin title and the publication year of 1657 is given at lower right, along with the names of the map-maker (Nicolaes Visscher, 1618-1679) and engraver (Gerard Jollain, fl.1660-1683). This was one of a set of five maps, one showing the world and four showing the continents.
