Map of California as an island, circa 1650. This map is by Dutch cartographer Joan Vinckeboons (also known as Johannes Vingboons). The map includes navigational rhumb lines and a compass rose at left. California is not an island as shown, but was depicted as such due to incomplete geographical knowledge at the time.
