Artist's Description

Magellan telescope. Magellan 6.5-metre telescope under construction at the Las Campanas observatory, Chile. The Magellan project involves the building of twin telescopes at the Las Campanas site. Construction work began in 1993 and the first Magellan telescope is expected to be operational by 1999. It will be operated by the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington (OCIW). The high altitude (2300 metres) of Las Campanas, and the clear air above it, make the site an ideal location for making astronomical observations. Photographed in 1997.
