Description
Madagascan pitcher plant (Nepenthes madagascariensis) growing in the Berenty Reserve, Madagascar. Pitcher plants are carniverous. They use scent, nectar and colour to attract insects. The interior of the 'vase' or 'trumpet' is slippery and contains downward pointing spikes which prevent insects from escaping. They then slip down to the base of the flower which contains digestive enzymes. Once digested the plants are provided with nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen. This particular species of pitcher plant is classed as endangered.
