Description
Lymphoma. Gross clinical specimen of a section through a human stomach showing a lymphoma (cancer of the lymph tissue). The lymphatic system is a network of nodes (glands) and ducts that carry lymph fluid around the body. This contains white blood cells that fight infections. Lymphoma causes proliferation of these cells, although they are not fully functional, and it severely compromises the working of the immune system. This makes the patient susceptible to opportunistic infections, which may be fatal. Anti-cancer drugs, radiotherapy or bone marrow transplants may prolong life.
