Artist's Description

Lyapunov space: computer mapping of a chaotic system. This image was created by mathematical models used to study how enzymes break down carbohydrates. Through adjusting a pair of parameters, the researchers Max Markus & Benno Hess of the Max Planck Institute for Nutrition found they could make their simulated enzymes behave in an orderly or chaotic fashion. The formula they used, named after the Russian Mathematician Aleksandr Lyapunov, generates a numerical value (the Lyapunov exponent) according to how chaotically a system is behaving. Here, order is represented by the coloured forms, and chaos by the black regions.
