Description
Total lunar eclipse and Tenerife bugloss plants (Echium wildpretii). Composite sequence showing the progression (from lower right to upper left) of a total lunar eclipse. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon. The orange colour of the Moon at totality (centre) is due to shorter wavelengths, such as blue light, being scattered more in Earth's atmosphere than longer wavelengths, such as red light. Photographed on 9 November 2003, in Teide National Park, Tenerife, the Canary Islands.
