London, UK, visible and infrared satellite image. North is at top. Vegetation is green, urban areas are white/grey and water is blue. The River Thames (blue) flows from left to right through the centre of London (centre). Heathrow international airport (white, lower left) lies to the north of a group of reservoirs. The Lee Valley reservoirs are seen (upper centre) to the north. London is the capital city of the UK, and has a population exceeding 7 million people. This area is around 55 kilometres across. Image obtained by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) sensor, carried on board NASA's Terra satellite. Photographed on 12 October 2001.
