Description
Gene determination. Gene fragments in a red dye being loaded into a gel prior to separation by electrophoresis. The dye is being placed in water- filled wells in the gel. The dye is heavier than water and sinks to the bottom of each well. The wells at centre have just been loaded with dye; those in the background (lower frame) were done previously. After the wells have been loaded an electric field will be applied across the gel. The gene fragments will diffuse through the gel in response to this field but at different rates. By measuring how the dye spreads in the gel, the sam- ple's genetic composition can be determined. Photographed during research into plant genes.
