Description
Light micrograph of mitosis (cell division) in root tip cells of garlic Allium sativum. The dark stained nuclear material lies among the pale cytoplasm. The upper centre cell is in the last stage (telophase) of mitosis. The surrounding cells are in prophase. Mitosis occurs in four stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase & telophase. During mitosis the chromosomes are arranged, divided & transported to opposite poles of the cell, forming two identical copies from the original. At the end of anaphase the chromosomes have migrated to opposite poles. In telophase the nuclear envelop reforms & the cell wall between regrows. Magnification X400 (at 35mm size).
