Description
Intestinal villi. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through intestinal villi and crypts of Lieberkuhn. Villi are the finger-like projections that increase the surface area of the small intestine. Each villus is covered by columnar epithelium, continuous with the crypt of Lieberkuhn glands (bottom, pink ovals). The cells of the epithelium are of two main types. Enterocytes (pink) are involved in digestion. Goblet cells (white and pink) produce mucus. In the core of each villus is the lamina propria. This is where digestive products are absorbed into the blood. Haematoxylin and eosin stained. Magnification x35 at 35mm size.
